How we've changed the world

Care
Jane's Story

Jane is ten years old and lives in the Mirima village in Uganda. Her father died and she became an orphan in 2005 when she lost her mother to HIV/AIDS. Jane's uncle, Daniel, received a goat and this resource has made a real difference to their lives.

Jane told us: "My goat took me to school this term! Uncle told me that he bought my books, pencils and uniform from the money he was collecting from people who take this goat" (i.e. who mate their local goats with the he-goat) "I will go to school as long as my goat can bring in money to this house". Her uncle Daniel has received training on animal husbandry and goat management. Through this training, his goats have thrived and he has been able to provide Jane with books, pencils, sugar, salt, soap and medication.

The Salvation Army
Jenny's Story

Jenny and her daughter were homeless for over eight months. Often Jenny found herself unable to get a crisis bed for her and her daughter, so slept wherever they could. "Sometimes I would just cry, especially on those nights where we had nowhere to go" she said in reaction of this emotional time in her life.

The Salvation Army Community Support Centre opened up a new world of hope for her. With help to find private rental accommodation, food vouchers, furniture for the house and vital emotional support Jenny was able to turn her luck around. Now studying law, Jenny hopes to be able to help other people who are having a difficult time. "I can't thank the Salvos enough, they brought me hope and helped me start a new life with my daughter ..." said Jenny.
